Zeebrugge and the area surrounding Bruges

The real city centre of Brugge (Bruges) is formed by the impressive Market Place and the adjacent Castle. The fine facades give the atmospheric square an improbable air of class. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Provincial Court was built on the east side. The south side is occupied by the 13th century Hall, the historic commercial centre. The most impressive building is the Belfort bell-tower with its carillon. The tower offers a splendid view over the city and the environment. In the middle of the square stands the statue of the heroes of the Golden Spurs Jan Breydel and Pieter De Koninck.
Via Breydelstraat you walk to the Castle or Burg. There you will find the Old Court of Justice, the Civil Registry, the City Hall and the Basilica of the Sacred Blood. This is where the relic of the Sacred Blood is kept. In the adjacent museum, you can admire the Shrine of the Sacred Blood. During the famous procession, the relic is carried around in this jewel of the goldsmith's craft. The Procession of the Sacred Blood takes place every year on Ascension Day at 3 p.m.
While we may describe Brugge (Bruges) in its entirety as a museum, the city still has a wealth of museums to boast about. The Groeningemuseum offers a remarkable picture of painting in the Southern Low Countries and Belgium from the 15th century to the present day. The Gruuthusemuseum opposite houses a treasure of old utensils and art works. Until 25 years ago, Sint-Janshospitaal was still used as a hospital, but now houses the Memling museum, including six masterpieces by Hans Memling.To the north of the city centre lies the Saint Anna district with the Lace Centre, the Jerusalem Church and the Museum of the Saint Sebastian guild. A visit to Brugge (Bruges) is not complete without having seen the idyllic Beguine Convent and the romantic Minnewater. In the Beguine convent, there are no longer any Beguines, but Benedictines in 15th century costume still maintain the historic atmosphere. The legendary swans swim on the Minnewater. The people of Brugge (Bruges) look after these noble creatures in fulfilment of the punishment imposed on them by the Maximilian of Austria, after they had beheaded his councillor Pieter Lanchals.

Zwin area
In the Zwin area, Damme flourished as outport of Bruges, and Lissewege as a stopover for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. They are now two cosy villages displaying a solid church tower amidst a landscape of winding dikes, dead straight waterways and impressive farms. Damme has become Flanders' bookshop village, the Zwin area a paradise for ornithologists. Birds come here to winter or to breed in summertime.
The Houtland
The Houtland is a woody area with castles and abbeys. At one time, the Houtland formed the core of the historic county of Flanders. The Count of Flanders had a country seat in Male and in Wijnendale. In the 18th and 19th century, wealthy Bruges nobility commissioned the construction of castles as country seats. Their architects found their neo-Gothic inspiration in flamboyant Bruges. Constant Permeke painted the toil of their farm tenants on canvas.
The Oudlandpolders
The Oudlandpolders belong to the earliest land claimed from the sea along our coast. The earliest villages came into being a thousand years ago. It can be surrealistically still here. Amidst the dispersed buildings of sturdy farms, the occasional old Friesian barn can be detected. The polder churches with their low cemetery walls seem short and stubby. Their octagonal towers are sometimes late Romanesque, sometimes early Gothic.
Forests of Flanders
The Bruges woodland and wetland is one of the most wooded areas of Flanders. The skirts of Bruges counts quite some forests (Tillegem, Tudor, Beisbroek…). A little further off, you have one of the most extensive forest domains: the Bulskampveld. And then we have not even mentioned the many castle forests, such as Wijendale. It's no wonder that this region knows many mysteries.
Green axes
Old railway beds, towing-paths, forest alleys … In this region you encounter many green axes. These roads are suitable routes for cyclists and walkers. One of the most famous routes is route 'Groene 62'. Until 1876 a train ran here between Torhout and Ostend which brought Parisians to the Belgian coast in record time. Today it is paradise for cyclists and forms the ideal link between the inland and the coast.
Canals
The scenery of the Bruges woodland and wetland is strongly determined by canals: from Bruges to Damme, from Bruges to Ghent, via Beernem and Oudenburg. And alongside each canal there lies a story hidden. Did you know for example that the spiritual father of the Damse Vaart is nobody less than Napoleon.

The Bruges woodland and wetland cycling network features 900 kilometres of biking pleasure in one of the most beautiful areas in Flanders. Using the cycle route network map adds a new dimension to riding: it makes it easy and so much more interesting!
The concept
In the Bruges woodland and wetland region Westtoer selected the most attractive and the safest bicycle trails and linked them up into a network. A number of paths and some bicycle bridges were specially made for this cycling network.
The point where two or more routes meet, is called a bicycle junction. In the Bruges woodland and wetland area Westtoer chose and numbered over two hundred junctions. With these numbers you can map out your route and plan your ride in advance. The kilometres marked on the map help you get an idea of the distance of your tour.
Starting place
It is advisable to start your bicycle ride at a cycling network access point. Such an access point is easy to reach, free parking is available and a rail or bus connection is usually nearby. An information board helps you get going. Close to an access point you will also often find a café or restaurant, lavatories, and a bicycle hire or repair shop.
Signposts
All routes within the Bruges woodland and wetland cycling network are signed in both directions. Every junction is marked by a sign bearing the junction number and directions to the closest junctions. Between the numbered junctions small route signs will guide you. Along the main cycling axes such as old railway right-of-ways and canals, you will find target signposts. These fingerposts show you the direction and the distance to lovely villages and picturesque towns.

Een beetje geschiedenis van Brugge
De geschiedenis van Brugge begint zowat 2000 jaar geleden. Op het grondgebied van de stad bevond zich toen een Gallo-Romeinse nederzetting. De bewoners deden niet alleen aan landbouw, ze voerden ook handel met Engeland en de rest van Gallië. Rond 270 vielen de Germanen voor het eerst de Vlaamse kustvlakte aan. Waarschijnlijk hielden de Romeinen hier op het einde van de derde eeuw en gedurende de vierde eeuw nog een militaire versterking in stand. Daardoor is het goed mogelijk dat Brugge bewoond bleef in de overgangsperiode naar de vroege middeleeuwen. Toen de heilige Eligius rond 650 in onze streek het christendom kwam uitdragen was Brugge wellicht de versterkte hoofdplaats voor de Vlaamse kuststreek.
Zowat honderd jaar later ontstond in Brugge ook enige handel met Scandinavië. De naam Brugge is trouwens afgeleid van het Oudnoorse ”Bryggja”, wat aanlegsteiger betekent. In documenten en op munten komt de naam Brugge al voor sinds het midden van de negende eeuw. Toen bestond er in Brugge al een sterke burcht (de Burg). De stad werd dan ook niet geplunderd door de Noormannen. Waarschijnlijk is de overzeese handel tussen Brugge en Scandinavië, het gebied van de Noormannen, blijven bestaan.
Brugge heeft dus vanouds een internationale havenfunctie gehad. De oudste handelsnederzetting van Brugge en de vroegmiddeleeuwse haven was tot rond 1050 vanuit zee bereikbaar. De tweede bewoningskern buiten de Burg lag bij de huidige Steenstraat en de Oude Burg. Daar groeide de stad tot rond 1100 het sterkst aan. De twee oudste parochiekerken van Brugge, Onze-Lieve-Vrouw en Sint-Salvators, liggen dan ook aan de rand van deze wijk. Ze dateren uit de negende eeuw.
In de elfde eeuw was Brugge uitgegroeid tot een commercieel centrum van Europees niveau. Maar in die periode verzandde de natuurlijke verbinding van Brugge met de zee. Een stormvloed in 1134 wijzigde echter het uitzicht van de Vlaamse kustvlakte. Er ontstond een diepe vaargeul, het Zwin, die toen tot aan het huidige Damme reikte. Via een kanaal van het Zwin tot aan Brugge bleef de stad tot aan de vijftiende eeuw met de zee verbonden. Wel moest Brugge daarvoor steeds een beroep doen op een aantal voorhavens zoals Damme en Sluis.
Zo kon Brugge in de volle middeleeuwen het belangrijkste handelscentrum van Noord-West-Europa worden. Vlaanderen was toen trouwens één van de meest verstedelijkte gebieden van Europa. Vanuit Brugge werd het Vlaamse laken, kwalitatief hoogstaande wollen stof, over heel Europa uitgevoerd. Van de dertiende tot de vijftiende eeuw telde Brugge tussen de 40.000 en de 45.000 inwoners, dubbel zoveel als nu in de historische binnenstad. In de veertiende eeuw was Brugge uitgegroeid tot een rijke internationale havenstad. Kooplieden uit Zuid- en Noord-Europa ontmoetten er elkaar. Zij deden voor hun handel een beroep op Brugse makelaars en hoteliers. In de stad werd niet alleen het al vermelde Vlaamse laken geproduceerd, ook allerlei andere (kunst)ambachten konden er zich ontplooien. Van groot belang is dat toen in Brugge ook al echte bankiers actief waren, Bruggelingen en Italianen. Kooplieden konden hier een lopende rekening openen, grote bedragen overschrijven, munten wisselen, zelfs met biljetten betalen.
Dit alles mag ons niet doen vergeten dat er in de middeleeuwse periode toch geregeld slechte tijden zijn voorgekomen in Brugge. De inkomensverschillen tussen de volksklasse (de ”ambachtslieden”) en de kooplieden-ondernemers (de ”patriciërs”) waren zeer groot, niettegenstaande de talrijke middenstand. Gewelddadige opstanden zoals die van 1280 en 1436-1438, werden hardhandig onderdrukt. In de opstand van 1302 koos de volksklasse de kant van de Vlaamse graaf tegen de koning van Frankrijk en de bezittende klasse. Deze strijd, waarin Brugge een vooraanstaande rol speelde, leverde een overwinning op voor de ambachtslieden en de Vlaamse graaf in de Guldensporenslag van 11 juli 1302. Deze historische datum is nu de nationale feestdag van de Vlaamse gemeenschap in België.
De veertiende eeuw, voor Brugge en Vlaanderen een periode van crisissen, opstanden, epidemieën, politieke onrust en oorlogen,eindigde met de dynastieke versmelting van Vlaanderen met Bourgondië. Vanaf 1384 begon de Bourgondische tijd voor Brugge. De stad bleef nog een eeuw lang het belangrijkste internationale handelscentrum ten noorden van de Alpen. De lakenproductie werd gedeeltelijk vervangen door luxegoederen, diensten in het bankwezen en kunstambachten. Het Bourgondische hof zorgde voor een sterke plaatselijke koopkracht. Die werd nog in de hand gewerkt door de buitenlandse kooplieden met hun internationale contacten van Portugal tot Polen. De welvaart steeg, reizigers kwamen onder de indruk van de weelde en de luxe in het stadsbeeld. Kunst en cultuur bloeiden als nooit tevoren. Aan dat alles kwam een einde na de plotse dood van Maria van Bourgondië in 1482. Door de opstand tegen haar weduwnaar Maximiliaan van Oostenrijk werd Brugge tien jaar lang geteisterd door politieke wisselvalligheden en militair geweld. De plaatselijke welvaart verdween uit de stad samen met het Bourgondische hof en de internationale handelaars.
In de zestiende eeuw kon Brugge zich enigszins herstellen. Toch was de stad haar eersterangspositie definitief kwijt aan Antwerpen. Brugge bleef wel van belang als regionaal centrum met nog heel wat internationale commerciële contacten en een bloeiende kunstsector. De scheuring van de Nederlanden, definitief na 1584, leidde tot het definitieve verval voor Brugge.
Rond 1600 was Brugge een provinciestad, met nog een bescheiden maritieme roeping. De Brugse koopmansgeest was nog niet verdwenen in de zeventiende en achttiende eeuw. Het commerciële leven bleef internationaal verankerd. Brugse reders en kooplui bleven handel drijven met het Spaanse wereldrijk, Engeland, Oost- en West-Indië.
Brugge onderging passief de revolutieperiode van 1789 tot 1830. De eerste industriële revolutie heeft de stad nauwelijks beroerd. Rond 1850 was Brugge de armste stad van het land. De burgerij sprak Frans, het ongeletterde volk kende alleen zijn plaatselijk dialect. Het openbare leven was tot 1885 volledig verfranst. Toch was Guido Gezelle (1830-1899), de belangrijkste Nederlandstalige dichter uit de negentiende eeuw, een Bruggeling. In de Europese literatuur werd Brugge beroemd door de Franstalige roman ”Bruges la Morte” van Georges Rodenbach (1892). Het boek beschrijft Brugge als een ingeslapen, dode maar mysterieuze stad.
Toen ”Bruges la Morte” verscheen was Brugge net met enkele nieuwe ambitieuze projecten begonnen. De nieuwe zeehaven, ingewijd in 1907 in Zeebrugge, kwam pas volop tot bloei in het laatste kwart van de twintigste eeuw. Sinds het einde van de negentiende eeuw kreeg Brugge ook een Europese faam als kunststad en toeristisch centrum. De Brugse monumenten, musea en vooral het ongerepte historisch stadslandschap zijn jaarlijks een unieke trekpleister voor miljoenen bezoekers. De haven van Zeebrugge en het cultuurhistorisch patrimonium van Brugge geven aan de stad een Europese en internationale dimensie.

He, just as the current owners, share the same passions: Medicine, Bruges and travelling. Pannenhuis was completely renovated in 1973. The house of the former mayor of Bruges, Andre Vandamme, was added to the complex. The interior as well as the exterior were completely renewed. The result is a contemporary ensemble, where anyone could feel at home.
That is also the phylosophy behind Pannenhuis hotel, no strikt rules about breakfast hours, no curfue, always a personal welcome... Brief 'The Pannenhuis Touch'!Diep in de 17de eeuw was Thomas Pannenhuis Hotel hoofdgeneesheer van de stad Brugge. Hij was een begaafd medicus, maar vooral was hij een getalenteerde organisator. De huidige hoteleigenaar deelt dezelfde passies: organiseren, geneeskunde en vooral Brugge. Pannenhuis werd volledig gerenoveerd bij de overname in 2010. Het huis van voormalig er werd aan het complex toegevoegd. Zowel het interieur als het exterieur werden volledig onder handen genomen met als resultaat een eigentijds maar toch tijdloos geheel.
